The Beards are a bearded four-piece currently situated in Adelaide who only play songs about beards and having beards. Onstage, The Beards preach about the virtues of having a beard with near-militant intensity. The audience will find itself divided as The Beards sing crowd favourites like Growing a Beard, Beard Revolution and No Beard, No Good. The beardless members of the crowd may find themselves singled out and chastised for their lack of facial hair, while those with beards may be brought onstage as an example of what having a beard is all about. But as hilarious as this oddball outfit are, they can be equally appreciated for their music.

With styles ranging from folk to rock and jazz to metal, The Beards’ prove themselves as talented musicians and diverse songwriters. The rhythm section of Nathaniel Beard, John Beardman and Facey McStubblington is complemented by the immensely talented frontman, Johann Beardraven. A typical Beards show can see Johann jumping from vocals to saxophone to drums to guitar.

Formed in 2005, The Beards have gained a rapidly expanding cult following in Adelaide, and the advent of Myspace has seen The Beards gain a strong interstate and global fan-base. Significant achievements thus far have included a full-length studio album; a capacity crowd at the album launch; sold out supports with 80s childhood icon, Peter Combe; sold out shows at The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel with UK comedian Stephen K Amos; national radio play on Triple J; extensive local radio play on Radio Adelaide and Three D Radio; and playing at the Adelaide Big Day Out 2008.

But The Beards’ landmark achievement to date has been an invitation to play at the opening ceremony of the 2009 World Beard and Moustache Championships in Alaska. The band will be making this pilgrimage and bringing with them the first ever Australian team to the competition – The Australian Bushrangers. But before that happens, The Beards will be embarking on a massive Australian tour / recruitment campaign which will take place this year.

Bearded man, put down those trimmers – the Beard Revolution has come.
